Hebrews 11:13-15 (NLT) All these people died still believing
what God had promised them. They did not
receive what was promised, but they saw it all from a distance and welcomed
it. They agreed that they were
foreigners and nomads here on earth.
Obviously people who say such things are looking forward to a country
they can call their own. They were
looking for a better place, a heavenly homeland.

Continuing yesterday’s
thought, our relationships with God and each other were broken because of
our basic human desire to be in control.
If you read along in Genesis, things go downhill pretty quickly after the
first humans grab at control – lies, accusations, jealousy, murder, deceit,
war, famine…

Which brings us to the present day. Not much has changed, has it?
Are you discouraged by the violence
and deceit in the world? Upset by poverty
and suffering? Tired of the competitive,
me-first culture? Do you long for peace
and justice? You know the world isn’t
supposed to be like this. You know God
intended something better. As a follower
of Jesus, you have learned how to live in the world and do your part to make it
better, but you still don’t fit here.

You are a refugee.
You were designed to live in God’s
perfect kingdom. The first humans, and
every human since, messed up and were kicked out of Eden. We are all Kingdom refugees. We have become accustomed to living in this
broken world but somewhere deep inside we know we don’t belong here. We want to return to our homeland – God’s
promised Kingdom.
