The Power of God’s Word in our Trials

It is written... claims the authority and power of God's WordWords have power, but none more powerful than the Word of God.

Jesus knew it. He counted on it. He relied on it.

After fasting 40 days in the wilderness, exhausted and hungry, Jesus faced off against the enemy. Satan came at Him at His lowest—because that’s what he does. He strikes when we’re weak, worn out, wandering in our own wilderness.

Three times, the devil dangled temptation before Jesus. And three times, Jesus resisted—not with His own words, but with God’s.

Why Jesus Used Scripture

Jesus could have spoken with His own authority. But instead, He quoted Deuteronomy—words spoken by Moses, words spoken by God.

Why? Because in Middle Eastern culture, quoting an ancestor’s words wasn’t just about wisdom—it was about respect. It acknowledged their authority. If Jesus had relied on His own words, He would have been claiming higher honor than the Father. Instead, He modeled humility.

And yet, Jesus’ use of Deuteronomy also affirmed something critical: Scripture has authority. The enemy wants us to question that authority and assert our own wisdom, to put our judgment above God’s truth.

Did God really say…?

It’s the same trick he used with Adam and Eve in the Garden, the same one he uses on us today. If he gets us to doubt God, to question truth, to trust our own wisdom, he wins.

The Enemy Fears God’s Word

Jesus didn’t debate or reason with the adversary. He simply spoke truth—Scripture, His weapon of choice.

It is written…

And that was enough.

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword…
Hebrews 4:12

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness. 2 Timothy 3:16God’s Word isn’t just ancient text—it’s living, active, powerful. It cuts through the enemy’s lies, exposing what’s true. That’s why our enemy twists it, takes it out of context, tries to make it mean something it doesn’t. He quoted, but misused Psalm 91, daring Jesus to force God’s hand. But Jesus didn’t fall for it. He knew the whole story.

In the portion of Psalm 91 the adversary omits, God promises refuge for whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High. When we have a close relationship with God, abiding in Him and He in us, we know God’s constant presence and provision. We trust His promises.

Doubt is the devil’s weapon.

If God really loves you, why is this happening?
If God is good, wouldn’t your life look different?
If God is all-powerful, why didn’t He stop the disaster?

Sound familiar? The devil urges us to question God’s Word. But God calls us to trust His judgment:

For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.
Isaiah 55:9

Life with God requires trusting things we can’t comprehend.

Just forty days after His baptism, Satan taunts Jesus to question God’s Words from heaven: this is my beloved Son. (Matthew 3:16-17)

If you are the Son of God… (Matthew 4:3)

But Jesus didn’t take the bait. He didn’t use His power for personal gain, didn’t demand God prove His faithfulness, didn’t let the glitz of glory usurp God’s place as God. He trusted His Father’s word over the enemy’s deception.

God’s Word Gives Life

From the beginning, God’s Word has spoken life.

And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.
Genesis 1:3

Jesus, the Word made flesh, didn’t just know Scripture—He lived it. He embodied it. He modeled a life fully aligned with God’s instructions, not as a burden, but as the life God designed for His people.

Be careful to follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live and increase. Deuteronomy 8:1God gave Israel the Torah so they could live well. We tend to focus on the many rules in the Law. But we gain a different perspective from another translation of the Hebrew for the word law, instruction. These instructions weren’t meant to restrict Israel but to guide them to abundant life.

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
Psalm 119:105

God desires abundant life for us too. We cannot live well apart from God’s Word. We might think we’re thriving, but if we’re not grounded in truth, we’re chasing empty promises.

Following Jesus’ Example

So how do we stand firm when the enemy comes whispering?

We do what Jesus did.

  • Marinate in Scripture – Let it saturate your soul. Delight in it.
  • Memorize it – Be prepared to speak it out loud in moments of struggle.
  • Recognize misuse – Satan will twist God’s words. Know the context.
  • Trust God’s promises – Even when life is hard, even when things don’t make sense.

If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.
John 8:31-32

Jesus stood firm on the Word. So can we.

When the world tells us to compromise, when the enemy tries to shake our confidence, we answer with the same authority Jesus did:

It is written…

And that is enough.

There’s more:
We’ve journey with Jesus into the wilderness, understanding the difference between God’s tests and Satan’s temptations. We followed the bread crumbs Jesus dropped by quoting from the Old Testament to defeat the adversary: to satisfy His hunger, to force God to serve Him instead of serving God, and to take the easy path to power. So much to learn from these familiar passages.

    2 Timothy 1:7
“For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self discipline.”

God has given us unlimited ❤️ love and wisdom to help ourselves, if only we would believe and accept.
    Happy Easter
