Shine Your Light on the Darkest Day

I have come as a light to shine in this dark world, so that all who put their trust in me will no longer remain in the dark. -Jesus

John 12:46 (NLT)

What do we desire on the darkest day of the year?

Light, of course!

We also crave light when the world feels darkened by violence, injustice, and economic inequality. Is this the world’s darkest time? Probably not, but that doesn’t minimize our despair.

Mary and Joseph grew up in brutal times. Rome ruled through fear. Caesar crushed insurrection with bloody force. He barely tolerated Jewish religious practices and historians suggest he taxed his subjects up to 80%. Life was not easy.

When would God make good on His promise to rescue Israel? The Jews craved relief, rescue, and freedom. They yearned for a Savior.

When the time was right, God sent the Light of the world. Jesus wasn’t the military conqueror the Jews expected. Though their circumstances remained the same, through Jesus people found hope and joy. Their hearts changed. Their communities changed. And in turn, the world was brighter.

Is it so different now? Don’t we seek an end to violence, racial profiling, and income inequality? On this dark day, in these dark times, we crave Light.

Good news! Jesus is still the Light of the world and His light resides within each of us. We can huddle around the warm ember of His love or we can fan the flame into a blaze. Jesus shines through us. We can brighten the life of every person we encounter.  We can influence our communities and, in turn, the world.

Let your light shine!

Winter solstice is a turning point. The days ahead will be brighter. The birth of the baby Jesus is a turning point too. Shine your Jesus light and I’ll shine mine. The world will never be the same.

Amen. Let your light shine so before men so that they see your good works and glorify your Father in Heaven. Thanks for the reminder my friend

Amen! Was going to use this scripture too – it was the one that came to mind but I wanted to focus on Jesus as the Light. It's His light that shines through us. Merry Christmas!
