Do we mean what we sing?

We’ve been surrounded by Christmas music these past several weeks which helps us get in the spirit. We sing the first verse from memory and hum along ‘til the end. The tunes invoke warm, nostalgic memories but do we even hear the words we sing?

Some hymns were written in the age of ‘thee and thou’, using archaic language. If the meaning behind these carols doesn’t resonate well, stop singing (just once). Simply read the words and try to rephrase them. There is rich meaning in our familiar songs.

I’ve paraphrased the first verse of one common hymn below and invite you to guess the title.

Please come! Come be with us now, God! We’re trapped here. We
don’t belong and long to go home; sick with grief until your Son pays off our
captors! Shout out loud! Everyone celebrate! God is with us!
