Love

When you consider the commandment to
love, what do you think?
(Please pause and answer before you
continue)

I immediately think of people: family, friends, dogs (OK, mostly
people). I also think about the lonely, hungry, forgotten, and hurting. If your
answer was similar, then neither of us named the most important kind of love.

Jesus replied, “You must love the Lord your God with all
your heart, all your soul, and all your mind. This is the first and greatest
commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”
Matthew 22 37-39 (NLT)

Above all else, love God with
everything you’ve got. This is the most
important
commandment. Loving people is equally important, but not first.

Actor Denzel Washington is well
known for his faith. When Dillard University invited him to give their 2015 commencement
address, they said “don’t say Jesus at our school”. So he didn’t. Instead he told graduates “ Put. God. First.
Put God first in everything you do. Everything you think you see in me,
everything I’ve accomplished, everything you think I have – and I have a few
things. Everything that I have is by the grace of God. Understand that. It’s a
gift.” He also talked about prayer, being grateful, and making a difference.

Put. God. First

I have some work to do. How about
you?

I am searching for Truth. During his trial, Jesus told
Pilate “What I say is true.” (John 18:37) Please join me over the next few
weeks in examining Jesus’ words as the source of Truth.

Wonderful post. I thought of sacrificial love. The kind that hurts. Thank you Jesus for loving us enough to die for us.

When you first thought of sacrificial love, were you thinking about loving people that way? Yes, we're supposed to love others as Jesus loved us – sacrificially.
I'm sure we're also supposed to love God sacrificially. What does that look like? Saying 'yes' in obedience no matter what He asks (like it or not, scared or not)? Even when there is loss involved? What else?
