Keep Giving Thanks

Psalm 100:4-5 (NIV) Enter His gates with thanksgiving and
His courts with praise; give thanks to Him and praise His name.  For the Lord is good and His love endures
forever; His faithfulness continues through all generations.

Don’t you hate those people?

You know, the ones who have the bulk
of their shopping done and houses fully decorated.  Meanwhile, my gut feels like it contains a
hamster working an exercise wheel.
Things to do.  Things to do.  Things to do.

It’s Christmas panic!  And it happens to me every year right after
Thanksgiving.

This past Sunday marked the
beginning of Advent.  In church this
means we have special readings, decorate with greenery and light one additional
candle each week on the Advent wreath.
But what does it really mean?

Advent is defined as the arrival of
a notable person, thing or event – like the advent of sliced bread or color TV
or internet shopping.  In church circles,
advent is the 4 weeks prior to Christmas when we anticipate and prepare for
Christ’s arrival.  I have several
thoughts about these preparations and will share them in the next few days.  Today I’d like to link Thanksgiving with
Christmas.

On the first Christmas, God entered
human history and lived among us.  Jesus
was literally God with us, Emmanuel.  Psalm
100 tells us to enter His presence with thanksgiving and praise so it’s
appropriate that Advent starts right after Thanksgiving.  But let’s not abandon our grateful attitudes
just because the American holiday is behind us.
Let’s continue to be deeply grateful to God as we anticipate His arrival.

Thanksgiving brings us into the
presence of God. (tweet this)

Like a productive garden, a rich
relationship should be tended regularly.
