Dirty Snow

Isaiah 1:18 (NLT) “Come now, let’s settle this,” says the Lord.  “Though your sins are like scarlet, I will make them as white as snow.”

I love the snow.
I hate when it gets dirty.A thought occurs to me each time we have a fresh snowfall (every few days here in New England).  Perhaps because I grew up in Florida and haven’t experience 50+ winters, I still love the snow.  Yes, even 5 feet of it!  Don’t be angry with me.  I know many of you are grumpy about all the snow this winter.
My favorite time is early morning before the plows and snow blowers intrude on the magical wonderland.  No tracks disturb the smooth blanket.  I take in the crisp beauty of the silent glistening.  I am refreshed
and at peace.  The world is perfect.

It’s not long before the plow leaves clumps of gray road crud at the end of the drive and salty slush discolors roadside snow banks.  While I love snow, I’m not so fond of the dirty piles that remain far into spring.  They’re just nasty!

But for a short time the grime is covered in white.

And I think about God’s grace and how He might feel about our lives.  Over and over, God washes away our mistakes, covering them with fresh grace.  Does He have a peaceful feeling in that moment when we are clean, restored, and perfect?  How long is it before we dirty things up again?  Does He, too, feel disappointed?

This thought occurred to me before our first snowstorm, but I didn’t share until now. I believe God planned it that way to display the repetitive nature of His grace. His forgiveness is different though. The dirt in our lives isn’t just hidden by fresh grace.  Our sin is not hanging around come spring. It has completely melted and been washed far out to sea. Gone. Forgotten.

Like a productive garden, a rich relationship should be tended regularly.
