The Party’s Over

Esther
9:22 (NLT) He told them to celebrate these days with feasting and gladness and
by giving gifts of food to each other and presents to the poor.

How was your big celebration?

What?  You didn’t
celebrate Mardi Gras?  Me either.  I spent Tuesday waiting in airports trying to
get out of Boston!  I didn’t see much
celebrating with all the snow delays.

What’s Mardi Gras all about anyway?  And why does such a worldwide party always culminate
on a Tuesday?

Although many revelers might not practice much in the way of
religion, Mardi Gras occurs as part of the Christian calendar.  Today is Ash Wednesday, the first day of
Lent, which is a season of repentance, humility, and self-sacrifice preparing
us for Christ’s crucifixion.  So, on the
eve of this somber season, people get their party on.

Our church held a Shrove Tuesday pancake supper (a week
early due to school vacation).  Why this
tradition?  Because people tried to use
up the rich foods in the pantry like cream, butter and sausages before this
season of self-denial and that sounds a lot like a pancake supper.

I’ll write more about Lent in my next post.

Like a productive garden, a rich
relationship should be tended regularly.
