Transitioning Back to a Scheduled Life

Love the Lord your God with all your
heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.

Deuteronomy
6:5 (NIV)

I
hear girls screaming across the street. The gleeful squeals are a perk of living
near the middle school on the first day of class.

Social
media posts these past 2 weeks suggest we’re the last region of the country to
start back to school, activities, and schedules. I like back-to-school and
having structure to the day, but my crazy color-coded calendar gets jam packed.
Is yours filling up too?

May
I suggest that our calendars reveal our priorities by recording how we spend
time? Today’s scripture makes me question whether our calendars reflect a
desire to love God first and foremost.

Does
God get intentional, dedicated time?

He
doesn’t on my calendar. On days when I wake up before the alarm, I pray quietly
before rising. When possible, I squeeze in scripture reading before morning
obligations. I sometimes skip Bible study class because I schedule conflicting appointments.
I’m totally guilty.

Let’s
start the school year with time scheduled for God just like exercise class or
music lessons. Choose a worship service and mark it down. Set the alarm 20 minutes
earlier to read scripture and pray. Block out time for a daily prayer walk.
Commit to attending Bible study (and time preparing).

Let’s not squeeze God in. Let’s schedule Him in.

Will you block out time to grow your
relationship with God?

Great reminder, Cathy. I do not get out of bed until I pray. I try to pray all day, keep that continual conscience contact with my Savior.

I try to keep the continual conscious contact with Jesus throughout the day too, but I find I really need the quiet to hear Him clearly.

Oh this is good, Cathy! We need this reminder, friend! I can't make it through the day if I don't start it out with God.

Oh I can make it through the day without Him, but it isn't pretty. When things go smoothly I can forget how much I need Him – until it falls apart. Everything is much better if I stay connected.
