Singing The Wondrous Cross From My Heart

Topics to Dig Into
On which the Prince of Glory died;
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride.
Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,
Save in the death of Christ, my God;
All the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to His blood.
See, from his head, his hands, his feet,
Sorrow and love flow mingled down.
Did e’er such love and sorrow meet,
Or thorns compose so rich a crown.
Were the whole realm of nature mine,
That were an offering far too small;
Love so amazing, so divine
Demands my soul, my life, my all.
When I Survey the Wondrous Cross
(text: Isaac Watts, music: Lowell Mason)
We sang this moving hymn during Holy Week. With some favorites like this one, I can get caught up in memories and familiarity rather than praising God from my heart. Maybe some of you don’t have this issue, but when this happens I like to rewrite the poem and pray it as a personal prayer.
Father God,
When I truly absorb the mystery of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross, all my possessions and accomplishments become meaningless and I’m ashamed of how proud I am of them. Help me, Lord, not to draw attention to myself, but may my whole life point to you and what you have done for me. You’re all I need, Lord. Nothing is more important to me. The cross beautifully demonstrates the extent and power of your love. I have no way of thanking you except to give my life to serve you. Amen.
Do you sing hymns as though you’re praying to God?

Beautiful Cherrylynn! That's the perfect surrender prayer/song.
