I signed up. Have you?
A few days ago, we considered what it would mean to be God’s slave. I honestly didn’t give it any more thought. But as I identify those things for which I am most thankful, I realize I am deeply grateful to be His slave.
John the Baptist spoke today’s scripture when Jesus asked to be baptized. While I don’t pretend to be among the ranks of John, I identify with his humility. I feel unworthy to be called God’s slave,
while at the same time, I am overwhelmingly thrilled by the opportunity to try.

When did I sign up?
It wasn’t when I first believed. No, only recently have I enjoyed the fullness of life available by surrendering to God’s way rather than my own.
I signed the capital ‘C’ when I reluctantly accepted the call to co-lead an Alpha class more than 10 years ago. The following year, when several Alpha participants wanted to go deeper with Bible study, God said “You can’t just abandon them!” Both experiences were heart pounding, palm sweating steps toward God’s purpose for my life.
With a trembling hand, I signed more of my name on God’s contract when I verbalized (aloud!) my leadership in ‘Bible study’ rather than ‘book group’. I scrawled more letters as I became comfortable with the informal ‘church lady’ title. God and I sealed the deal when I put my words under His control and we launched Seeds of Scripture.
I am His and I have never felt more full.
I am a broken nobody with a checkered past. And yet a recent note of appreciation tells me God is using Seeds to touch lives. He is amazing and I am humbly, gratefully privileged to serve Him.
I’m still a rebellious and disobedient slave, but I joyfully serve Him.
Like a productive garden, a rich relationship should be tended regularly.
