No Rules. Just Right

Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because
you will have the light that leads to life.”
John 8:12 (NLT)

Put God first in your life. Be humble. Take care of the sick and poor. Don’t be afraid or worry. Love your enemies. Treat others as you’d like to be treated. Do not sin.

Just some of Jesus’ instructions.

Do they sound like a list of rules? Do they limit your life? Can a person who follows these instructions still have a fun, successful and enjoyable life?

Or…

Do you see these instructions as clues on a treasure hunt? The X on the treasure map marks abundant life and Jesus leads you along the path to find it. Missing or ignoring a clue takes you off course.

God knows what fullness of life looks like and He makes it accessible for everyone. He has clearly marked the path and Jesus lights the way. However, every time you choose to disobey God, you step off the path and risk missing a piece of it.

Jesus is speaking to the crowd who just witnessed Him pardon the woman caught in adultery (see my last post). He told her “Go. Leave your life of sin.”

Jesus speaks the same words to you. Don’t sin because it leads you away from the Light and away from your best possible life. Though the world says differently, you’re not missing anything by following Jesus. In fact, seeking the worldly life prevents you from finding God’s abundant life.

Do you see the Bible as a list of rules or as a treasure map? (tweet)

Treasure map. The closer I get to Jesus, I desire to obey. His light reveals the darkness in me, overtakes it and I am one step closer to being like Him. Great post.

I'm with you in that I've made the transition to seeing the Bible as a treasure map because I've tasted His abundant life and want more of it. Before, I didn't understand when people would say they obey God because they want to rather than obeying Him because it's what he requires.
