It’s Full of Emotion

Hebrews
12:1
(NLT) – Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of
witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us
down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up.  And let us run with endurance the race God
has set before us.

Do you find Scripture dry and
boring?  You’re not alone.  I remember those days and some of the books
are still pretty hard to get into.
However, if you’re not ever experiencing emotion when you read, you’re
probably just reading with your head.

The Bible is full of emotion, so try reading with your heart.  Try entering the story as a character.  Imagine the excitement and joy or the shock
and outrage of the first readers.  Apply
the instructions to your life and let yourself react emotionally.  Sometimes this takes reading more than one
verse, so I will begin offering a link to a longer section of scripture.  Click on the scripture reference Hebrews 12:1
to give it a try.

So….
What do you feel when you read today’s verse?

Interesting! I have to admit it would be a new way to look at reading the Bible. Thank you

It really helps to imagine yourself as a character in the situation being described. What kind of trust would it take for Abraham to leave Mesopotamia for an unknown destination? What would Mary and Joseph have felt in their predicament? It certainly makes it come alive and makes the characters real people. Thanks for reading and commenting. I'm sorry I haven't responded sooner. I'm trying to keep up with the UBC.

Funny, one thing that I would never describe the bible, new or old testament, is dry and boring. It would never have endured were it dry and boring. It endures precisely because it is so full of life and emotion and challenges us at every emotion. Thanks for sharing! Jina

As a kid reading the King James Version, I definitely couldn't get involved in the stories. Perhaps I wasn't taught how to read properly. We memorized. With better translations and Bible study skills I have discovered a living breathing text as it was intended. I'm not sure everyone agrees with us though. Thanks for reading and commenting. I'm sorry I haven't responded sooner. I'm trying to keep up with the UBC.

Hi Cathy, Thank you so much for your kind words on Riley's Smile! You are correct… the spirituality can become difficult to maintain watching a child suffer. I enjoyed your lesson here and will definitely check out the scripture today.
