Samuel 16:7 (NLT) – But the Lord said to Samuel, “Don’t judge by his
appearance or height, for I have rejected him.
The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the
Lord looks at the heart.”

Today’s verse comes from the story
in which Samuel went to Jesse’s house to anoint one of his sons as the new king
of Israel. As Jesse’s oldest son
approached, Samuel’s first impression was ‘king’. But God saw things differently so Samuel
continued presenting each of the sons to God.
If you click on the scripture reference above to read the whole story,
you’ll learn that Jesse hadn’t even invited his youngest son, David, to the anointing
ceremony.

God
has an advantage over us. A person’s
heart is part of God’s first impression.
We, on the other hand, have to work hard to look beyond outward
appearance and get to know a person’s heart.
This takes time and work. Fight
the flash judgment and look deeper.

Thank you, Cathy for your delightful post 🙂 Loved Mrs. Edwards … How true – all it takes is a bit of nudging to help us overcome our fears, which so often deprive us of so many good things in Life like going to church and being part of a loving community.
As for judging by appearances – sadly it works both ways. Oftentimes we are quick to buy into someone or something because the externals are attractive … when under the superficial surface there is nothing.

Very true, Judy. We are fooled by all kinds of outward appearances. There is eternal truth in the saying 'Beauty is only skin deep'. I try to catch and stop myself when my mind makes judgments.
