Digging for Treasure

Proverbs 2:1-6 (NLT)

My child, listen to what I say,
    and
treasure my commands.
Tune your ears to
wisdom,
    and
concentrate on understanding.
Cry out for insight,
    and
ask for understanding.
Search for them as you
would for silver;
    seek
them like hidden treasures.
Then you will
understand what it means to fear the Lord,
    and
you will gain knowledge of God.
For the Lord grants wisdom!
    From
his mouth come knowledge and understanding.

Do you dig through your accessory drawer to find just
the right gem (or tie) for the day?  You
have go-to favorites.  One corner has a
particular color.  What suits your mood
or makes you feel beautiful?  Some days
yield a quick pick while other days you linger in thought.  Some days you forget entirely.  Accessorizing has become a habit.  Routine.
Finding a daily message from God’s book of wisdom might take some
practice too, but  you will learn to tune
your ears.

I like to read a verse several times and let it tumble
around in my head as I go about my morning chores.  Where does the verse take my thoughts and
why?  What does it mean for my life?  Sometimes a word or phrase jumps off the
screen and slaps me in the face offering encouragement, affirmation, a new
perspective, conviction or correction.   Reading
different translations can expand the nuances of a verse because the original
Hebrew and Greek don’t always translate easily to English.  If one verse or devotion doesn’t speak to me,
I read another.  Almost every day, one of
the devotions I read contains a personal message.

Search for God’s message as you would for silver; seek
His wisdom like hidden treasures.
