Which Seat?

When Jesus noticed that all who had come to the dinner were
trying to sit in the seats of honor near the head of the table, He gave them
this advice: When you are invited to a wedding feast, don’t sit in the seat of
honor. What if someone who is more distinguished than you has also been
invited? The host will come and say, ‘Give this person your seat.’ Then you
will be embarrassed, and you will have to take whatever seat is left at the
foot of the table!
“Instead, take the lowest place at the foot of the table.
Then when your host sees you, he will come and say, ‘Friend, we have a better
place for you!’ Then you will be honored in front of all the other guests. For
those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves
will be exalted.”
Hearing this, a man sitting at the table with Jesus
exclaimed, “What a blessing it will be to attend a banquet in the Kingdom of
God!”
Luke 14:7-11,15 (NLT)

My last
post
looked at the excuses made by those invited to God’s banquet in the
Parable of the Great Feast. The lesson: Jesus won’t tolerate “I’m too busy” as
a reason for not accepting His invitation to participate in the Kingdom. Curiously,
that lesson follows today’s scripture.

I can imagine this man sitting at
the table with Jesus, listening to His advice and exclaiming with anticipation “How
wonderful to be at the King’s banquet!” What is the man thinking after Jesus
responds with the feast story warning that the invitees will find themselves too
pre-occupied to even attend?

Is it possible the invited guests in
the parable don’t properly value their invitation or honor their host?

Is Jesus making a statement about
humility (or the lack thereof) and their excuses?

What do you learn from Jesus’ advice
about choosing your seat at the table?

Humility seems to be the word for me lately. I am learning to let God boast about what He is doing in and through me. Great post
