Proverbs 12:8 (NIV) – The words of the reckless pierce like
swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.

Have you ever squeezed out too much toothpaste and
tried to push it back into the tube? How
has that worked for you? It’s definitely
messy! Once the paste is out, it cannot
be sucked back in.

That’s how words are, particularly hurtful
ones. They can’t be completely taken
back. I always wonder how a judge can
strike witness testimony and expect the jury to forget. Whether uttered in haste or with intention,
damaging words can’t simply be erased from memory. So while someone might retract a statement or
apologize, the words are still out there and they can be messy.
