Israel – The Sheep Gate

The Sheep Gate – also call the Lion’s Gate and Stephen’s Gate

Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for the feast of the Jews. Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades.
John 5:1-2

Just to the right of the Sheep Gate are the pools of Bethesda. It is so named because the sheep being offered for sacrifice were brought through this gate to the pools. The sheep would have been washed and sheered so they could be inspected for blemishes. Even one scratch or discoloration made it unworthy. Only a completely perfect sheep was acceptable for sacrifice.

Now consider…

This is also the gate through which Jesus was brought after his arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane. The final sacrifice. The perfect lamb without sin prepared to face inspection by the priests.
