I recently applauded Levi, who left his lucrative, corrupt tax collecting job, changed his life, and became Matthew the disciple. Readers responded: I have a career. It would be irresponsible to leave. There are different levels of commitment. The life of a disciple is not for everyone.
My softer, follow-up post reassured readers that it’s not necessary to drop everything to follow Jesus; discipleship is possible right in your current circumstances. This is true, but incomplete. “Follow me” requires change.
In today’s scripture story, sneaky Nicodemus professes his belief to Jesus at night because he values his day job as a eligious leader. Remember, the Pharisees were opposed to Jesus and sought to kill him. Jesus says entering the Kingdom demands a completely new life. He wants committed followers, not secret admirers. Action, not words.
As Kyle Idleman says in Not a Fan, “There is no way to follow Jesus without him interfering with your life. Following Jesus will cost you something.”
