Are You Prepared?

I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that
raised Him from the dead. I want to suffer with Him, sharing in His death, so
that one way or another I will experience the resurrection from the dead!
– The Apostle Paul
Philippians 3:10-11 (NLT)

I want to suffer.

Can you imagine speaking these
words?

Author Lucinda Secrest McDowell
shared her sweet memories of the great author, Elisabeth Elliot, at Encouraging
Words
.  While I recommend reading the
complete
post
, Lucinda retells this one warning from her mentor:

I [Lucinda] remember her warning us that our generation was
not prepared to suffer or even be inconvenienced. I wrote [in my journal] “She
pointed out that we must learn discipline and submission to authority in order
to better be able to submit more wholly to God. Discipline should be exercised
in our daily devotions, in our studies and in our love life. We must become
responsible for that with which God has entrusted us now so we can be better
prepared for all He has in store for us later.”

This rings true. We are not prepared
to be inconvenienced for Jesus, let alone suffer for Him.

How many people don’t find time for
daily scripture and prayer? Clearly, you are
reading this. But, really, is your time with God a disciplined act of
respect and obedience? Or does God get your leftover time?

In today’s culture, there’s a
diminished respect for authority which can only hurt our desire to submit to
God (or anyone). Submission is not equivalent to becoming a doormat. Mrs. Elliot
said “Daily prayers for another can be an
opportunity of laying down our lives for someone else.”

What do you think? Would better discipline
prepare us for what God has in store?
